Statement of Significance

When the zooxanthellae (algae) inside of the coral polyps die the coral loses is color or bleaches. More importantly the coral loses an important source of nutrients. When the coral loses it color it looks bleached, thus the term coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is a problem because if the coral does not regain its zooxanthellae soon enough it will die. The coral reefs are a huge ecosystem and if the coral dies the organisms that depend on the coral for food and shelter will also die.
